I always do my salad in a pasta bowl as I like to layer it up and discover all the hidden layers as I eat, but there are no hard and fast rules here, you can kinda make it up as you go along.
In this particular salad is the following:
- Lettuce of choice
- Peppers of choice
- Tomatoes of Choice (I tend to go for cherry as they are really tasty)
- One whole orange
- Hard Boiled Eggs
I always start with my lettuce and it depends on what I can get, some times its mixed leaves, other times its iceberg.
Then layer in any order your cucumber radish, peppers, tomatoes, celery, beetroot.
Layer the avocado next, as this tends to go mush if layered at the bottom.
Now cut the orange in half, then quarters and then halve the quarters. Carefully using a sharp knife slice of the very edge of the orange slice and remove the slice from the skin (See video below). Place orange segments on top of the salad and finish with the tuna.
I tend to use tuna in water or sunflower oil rather than brine, as I find the brine can make the tuna a little soggy.
There are lots of alternatives to this salad, you can choose goats cheese, feta, white cheeses, standard cheeses, ham and other cold meats instead of tuna and so much more. This can also be dairy free and vegetarian/vegan by removing the eggs and tuna and replacing it with extra salad or free from dairy f and meat replacements.
The orange segments may seem an odd choice. However its packed with vital vitamins and gives a nice twist to an otherwise standard salad, whilst combined with the avocado makes for wonderful flavour.
